Majlis ud Da'wah wal Islah (MADAWI)

Background

The Majlis ud Da'wah wal Islah (or MADAWI) was officially formed in 1990 with the aim of coordinating the activities of Ulama in the Western Cape. With the passage of time its activities and scope increased and more Ulama of various backgrounds joined.

MADAWI rented modest sized facilities in which to base its operations. Various social services are rendered to the public. These include such varied fields as Education, Counselling, Da'wah, Relief and Welfare. MADAWI's major focus is on the educational front, aiming to serve the broader Muslim community in the Western Cape.

General Assembly

The General Assembly consists of all affiliated members and subsidiary organs operating under the auspices of MADAWI. These include:

  1. Education
    • Primary: Madrasah coordination programme for Maktabs.
    • Advanced: Qaasimul Uloom - Arabic language college for Sharî'ah studies.
    • Adult literacy programmes.
  2. Tasneef (Publications)
    • Translating Arabic works into English
    • Editing and publishing English and Arabic books
    • Newsletters
    • Establishing a standard syllabus for Maktabs
  3. Iftaa
    • Research in Islamic juristic issues.
    • Regional representative to the Fatwa Committee of SANHA.
  4. Makulaat (Dietry Issues)
    • Executive member of SANHA
  5. Welfare
    • Distributing food hampers and clothing
    • Madrasah feeding programme
    • Operation winter warmth
    • Udhiyaa and meat distribution
  6. Counselling
    • Matrimonial disputes
    • Liason with other Ulama

MADAWI regards it as a great honour to serve on the Ulama Council of SANHA (South African National Halaal Authority). The importance of assisting the community in the matter of Halaal and Haraam cannot be overemphasised. We ask Allah to take SANHA from strength to strength and use us for this service as well.
