(Sayings and Traditions of the Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him)

Abu Ubayd radiyallaahu anhu narrated:

I cooked a pot of food for Rasulullaah sallallaahu alayhi wasallam. He used to like the foreleg. I therefore served it to him. He asked, "Give me another foreleg." I served it to him.

He asked, "Give me another foreleg." I exclaimed, "Yaa Rasulallaah! How many forelegs does a sheep have!"

Rasulullaah sallallaahu alayhi wasallam replied, "By He who holds my life in His Hand, had you not said anything you would have been able to give me the foreleg I requested."

Commentary (Abridged)

Mawlana Zakariyya Kandalwi comments:

This was a miracle of Rasulullaah sallallaahu alayhi wasallam. Musnad Ahmad narrates a similar incident from Abuu Raafi' radiyallaahu anhu. This not surprising. Many such incidents happened in the life of Rasulullaah sallallaahu alayhi wasallam. Al-Qaadi Iyaad has mentioned them in his book, ash-Shifaa.

Abu Ayyuub al-Ansaari radiyallaahu anhu once invited Rasulullaah sallallaahu alayhi wasallam and Abu Bakr radiyallaahu anhu. He had prepared only enough for the two. Rasulullaah sallallaahu alayhi wasallam told him to invite thirty respected men of the Ansaar radiyallaahu anhum. He invited them. After they had eaten Rasulullaah sallallaahu alayhi wasallam said, "Now invite sixty." After they had eaten others were invited. The food proved sufficient for 180.

Samurah radiyallaahu anhu narrates:
"Someone sent a bowl of meat to Rasulullaah sallallaahu alayhi wasallam. People came to him from morning till evening and ate from it."

Abu Hurayrah radiyallaahu anhu had a bag. It contained a little more than ten dates. Rasulullaah sallallaahu alayhi wasallam asked if he had anything to eat. He replied, "I have a few dates in this bag."

Rasulullaah sallallaahu alayhi wasallam took a few and spread them. He offered a du'aa and said, "Invite ten people at a time and feed them."

After a great multitude had eaten Rasulullaah sallallaahu alayhi wasallam returned the remaining dates to Abu Hurayrah radiyallaahu anhu and said, "Keep eating from it, but do not turn and empty it."

Abuu Hurayrah radiyallaahu anhu says, "I ate from it during the time of Rasulullaah sallallaahu alayhi wasallam, Abu Bakr, Umar and Uthmaan. I would give charity from there too which amounted to a great quantity. When Uthmaan was martyred someone took it from me by force."

Serve this Turkish appetizer, Salata Filfil be Laban, with bread for dipping and a bowl of olives. It also makes a good accompaniment to grilled lamb kebabs.

Roasted Peppers with yoghurt and mint

  • 1 ½ each: red and green bell peppers, roasted, peeled and diced
  • 2 Tbsp extra-virgin olive oil
  • Salt and cayenne pepper to taste
  • 4 cloves garlic, finely chopped
  • 350 g Greek yoghurt
  • 2 Tbsp chopped fresh mint leaves

Lightly sauté the roasted diced peppers in the olive oil until they soften; do not allow to brown. Sprinkle with salt and pepper and half the garlic as the peppers cook. Remove from heat and mix in the yoghurt, remaining garlic and mint. Chill until ready to serve.

Chef's tip: To char peppers or chillies under the grill. Arrange in a layer on a baking tray under hot grill. Allow to char evenly turning occasionally. Place in a plastic bag, seal and allow to cool for 10 minutes they will shrivel but the skin will easily lift to reveal silky flesh underneath.

One out of every five persons on this planet is a Muslim.  He is your neighbour, customer, supplier, employee, boss or friend.

Madinah, anglicized as "Medina" by the West, occupies a very special place in the heart of every Muslim and is visited by millions annually.

It is a blessed and sacred land which Almighty Allah chose for the migration and residence of the Final Prophet, Muhammad (Peace be upon him)

Madinah Munnawwarah has been given many names in the Traditions and books of history. Some of these are:-

  • Al-Madinah: i.e. the city.
  • Madinatu Rasulillah: i.e. the city of the Messenger of Allah.
  • Muhaajara Rasulillah: i.e. the place of migration of Rasulullah Sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam.
  • Taabah: i.e. the pure piece of land
  • Madhja'u Rasulillah: i.e. the resting place of Rasulullah sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam.

Interesting "bites" to whet the appetite for knowledge.

Why Peppers are hot?

The heat of the pepper or chilli comes from capsaicin which is said to release endorphins in the brain that help to block pain and induce a sense of well being.

The "hotness" of chilli specifically is measured by Scoville units devised by Wilbur Scoville in 1912.

Its scale ranges from zero for Bell peppers to the Naga Jolokia pepper of Assam, India which has a Scoville score of 855.000

Self-raising flour

White flour to which sodium bicarbonate and one or more of the acid-reacting substances are added, that is, monocalcium phosphate, sodium acid pyrophosphate, or sodium aluminium phosphate. It is seasoned with salt. The inclusion of these ingredients provides a leavening system that allows the flour to rise when wetted in the preparation of baked goods.
