ORGANISATION PROFILE

The Story of our Beginning, the Present and the Future
Ashrafiyyah Trust

The Ashrafiyyah Trust is the group of trustees that oversee the affairs of the Waterloo Masjid situated in Kenwyn in Cape Town.

During 1986 a few brothers came together and decided to renovate a Masjid neglected for approximately 18 months, in a previously Muslim majority suburb (and a target for "bergies" homeless vagrants). In terms of the then government´s inhuman apartheid policy of forced removals only about 5 Muslim families remained. During Ramadaan of that year Taraweeh was started by candle light and thereafter by generator. Because the full Quraan was read, the Masjid became a favourite among those wanting to practise on the Sunnah of listening to the entire Qur'aan in Taraweeh and expats from Joburg, Durban and Port Elizabeth.

The first unofficial Imaam was Ml Shabeer Raajah and the unofficial Muadhin was Brother Marzuq Alexander, the office manager of SANHA in the Western Cape today. Soon thereafter, the other facilities were upgraded and it became a must visit for learned Ulamaa and pious Elders locally and from abroad – to whose du´aas members believe the Masjid owes its phenomenal growth. Presently the area has about a 50% Muslim population especially and is popular among expats. The Masjid presently offers daily Hifz classes.

SANHA is proud to count this organisation as an associate member who endorses and supports the SANHA mission of Halaal.

HADITH
(Sayings and Traditions of the Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him)

A companion of the Prophet, Jaabir bin Abdillaah (may Allah be pleased with both him and his father), narrated:

The Prophet of Allah peace be upon him went out and I accompanied him. He came to the house of an Ansari woman. She slaughtered a sheep for him. He ate there from. She also brought him a bunch of moist dates which he ate. He then performed ablution (Wudhu) for Salaat al-Dhuhr. After the Salaat, he returned and she served the remaining meat. He ate and performed Salaah al-Asr without repeating his Wudhu.

Commentary

Mawlana Zakariyya Kandalwi comments:
This Hadith proves that it is not necessary to repeat wudhu after eating food cooked on fire. It also proves that the Prophet of Allah peace be upon him did eat twice in a day. The narration that he only ate once daily may be according to the knowledge of the narrator. It may mean that while he did eat twice a day the narrator denied filling his stomach twice a day.

WINNING RECIPES

Tried and tested recipes from chefs, gourmet connoisseurs, contributors and also from kitchens of our certified plants for your culinary pleasure.

Save the information and make up your own collection of winning recipes.

Egg dishes are versatile and easy to cook. Combine these with the taste and health benefits of mushrooms and you will have the family asking for more.

Here is a fluffy mushroom omelette that can be made ready in about 25 minutes and serves four.

    Ingredients
  • 4 tbsp olive oil
  • 4 tbsp butter
  • 125g baby button mushrooms
  • 2 garlic cloves, crushed
  • 25g fresh chives, chopped
  • 8 eggs, separated
  • 100g cheddar cheese, grated

Method

  1. Heat the oil and the 2 tablespoons butter in a frying pan over a high heat. Add the mushrooms to the pan and toss well in the pan juices until tender.
  2. Add the garlic and cook for a further minute, then season. Remove from the pan.
  3. Put the egg whites into a large bowl and whisk until soft peaks form. Gently beat the egg yolks in a separate bowl, and then fold into the egg whites until completely missed.
  4. Heat half the remaining butter in the pan over a medium heat and when melted, add half the eggs. Cook for 2-3 minutes, until the underside is just set and golden. Sprinkle 1 side with half the cheese and add the mushrooms. Flip over the other half of the omelette and remove from heat. Repeat to make the second omelette.
  5. Halve each omelette and divide between four. Serve with toasted ciabatta.

KNOW ISLAM SERIES

One out of every five persons on this planet is a Muslim.  He is your neighbour, customer, supplier, employee, boss or friend.

Does Islam and Christianity have different origins?

Together with Judaism, these three religions go back to the Prophet Abraham (peace be upon him), and their three prophets are directly descended from his sons – Muhammad (peace be upon him) from the eldest Ishmael and Moses and Jesus from Isaac (peace be upon them). Abraham (peace be upon him) established the settlement which today is the city of Makkah and built the Ka´bah with his son Ishmael (peace be upon him) in which direction Muslims all over the world face when they pray.

As Muslims we are commanded in our Scripture, the Noble Quraan, and the teachings of our Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to ensure the sanctity of life and contribute towards a peaceful society.

We are told in the Holy Quran in Chapter 5 Verse 85

"And nearest among them in love to the believers wilt thou find those who say ´we are Christians´, because among these are men devoted to learning..."

The constitution of the Church, Lumen Gentiam of the Vatican ii in Chapter 16 takes cognisance of this when it states.

"But the plan of salvation also includes those who acknowledge the Creator. In the first place among these are the Muslims, who professing to hold the faith of Abraham, along with us adore the One and Merciful God, who on the last day will judge mankind."

I DIDN'T KNOW THAT

Interesting "bites" to whet the appetite for knowledge.

Béarnaise - sauce of egg yolk, butter, lemon juice or vinegar, and herbs

Chasseur - brown sauce with shallots, mushrooms and tomatoes, for hot meat.

Soubise - white sauce with pureed onions

Tartare - mayonnaise with chopped gherkins, chives and cream, for hot fish

Veloute - white sauce made with veal, chicken or fish stock, with added cream and egg yolk.

Health and Beauty

Look good - feel good. Tips for a sound mind in a sound body.

Green Tea! Health benefits in one steaming cup.

The polyphenols in green tea-chemicals packed with antioxidants and are believed to be more potent than vitamin C.

Green tea may be responsible for numerous health benefits, some of which are described below.

Reduced cancer risk

Diabetes
Studies show that green tea may help prevent Type I diabetes and slows its progression after diagnosis. It regulates glucose tolerance in the body.

Liver and bowel diseases

Neurological Ailments
Numerous anecdotal reports of studies showing that green tea consumption can also help prevent or treat neurological ailments such as multiple sclerosis, Parkinson´s disease, and Alzheimer´s disease.

Antiseptic
Green tea is even a good antiseptic for relieving itching and swelling. Just soak a cotton ball in it and apply the tea to blemishes, sunburns, scrapes, insect bites, scratches or puffy eyelids.

With so many potential good effects and almost no potential harmful effects, reach for a cuppa - a cuppa green tea and drink your way to health.

SMILE AWHILE

In the serious world of Halaal, we take this moment to bring you a smile, a chuckle or even a hearty laugh. It's therapeutic, so pass it on:

We all know that age of the child where the day is preoccupied with the why questions.

Here are some unanswered adult why questions submitted by our webmaster.

  • Why do we press harder on the remote control when we know the batteries are getting dead?
  • Why do banks charge a fee on "insufficient funds" when they know there is not enough money?
  • Why does someone believe you when you say there are four billion stars, but check when you say the paint is wet?
  • If people evolved from apes, why are there still apes?
  • Why do people constantly return to the refrigerator with hopes that something new to eat will have materialized?
  • Why is it that whenever you attempt to catch something that's falling off the table you always manage to knock something else over
  • Why do you never hear father-in-law jokes?
  • Why do they use sterilized needles for death by lethal injection?
