In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Fourth International Halaal Conference

From zero to twenty one million. That is the Muslim population of China by the grace of Allah Ta'ala and the efforts of a handful of emigrant traders from the Arabian Peninsula fourteen hundred years ago.

This is a telling blow to the myth of Islam being spread at the point of the sword since China had never been conquered by Muslim army. It serves to reinforce the role of trade in the affairs and development of nations. The Noble Quran itself states in the words of Allah, the Almighty .

"But let there be amongst you traffic and trade by mutual goodwill..." (Chapter 4 verse 29)

The Bible too encourages trade as seen in the Prophet Isa's (Christ's) (Peace be upon Him) parable to the servants in Matthew 24 verses 14-30.

SANHA has drawn inspiration from the many positive spin offs of our last three conferences where international and local experts presented their arguments and exchanged ideas.

Serving as an epicentre of thought, the meeting of minds at a conference certainly opens a window into the industry and allows role players to radiate decisions taken.

SANHA is proud to host the 4th International Halaal Conference entitled "Serving the winning choice"

The conference offers perspectives in understanding the world of Halaal. With local and international guests specializing in their respective fields with regards to Halaal, its importance and its effect on the global communities it features local and foreign experts. The conference is tailored for the industry, theologians, professionals, academicians, students, government agencies, importers and exporters.

Speakers from as far afield as Kuwait and the USA have already accepted our invitation to address you.

It is hosted concurrently with the Africa Big 7, the continents leading trade Exhibition. It will be held as follows:

Conference: Monday, 20th July 2009
Big 7 Exhibition: 19th - 21st July 2009
Venue: Gallagher Estate
Midrand, Johannesburg
South Africa

(Sayings and Traditions of the Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him)

A companion of the Prophet, Yusuf bin Abdillaah bin Salaam (may Allah be pleased with him), narrated:

I saw the Prophet of Allah (peace be upon him) taking a slice of barley bread. He put a date on it and said, "This is the curry of that." He then ate it.

Mawlana Zakariyya Kandalwi comments:
Dates were not used as a condiment, hence the Prophet of Allah (peace be upon him) suggested that it can be used in place of curry. A few days of one´s life can be passed in this manner. One should spend one´s life on things that will benefit in the hereafter and forever. It should be pondered upon and all one´s time should not be wasted in maintaining and nourishing the stomach. It is very foolish to do so. The few days granted in this world will, in any way, pass. Death brings an end to all difficulties. We should ponder on those things that even death cannot bring an end to.

Tried and tested recipes from chefs, gourmet connoisseurs, contributors and also from kitchens of our certified plants for your culinary pleasure.

Save the information and make up your own collection of winning recipes.

Nothing can be more international than the human preoccupation of cooking. Certain dishes have become synonymous to nations and their people who created the delicacies that have gone to many lands over the passage of time. pizza from Italy, stir fry from China, curries of India, Paella from Spain are a few examples.

Proudly of Cape Malay origin, there is nothing that cements an image of the Cape and the hospitality of its people than the koeksister.

Here is an authentic recipe sourced from the Boorhaanol Islam´s "Boeka Treats" recipe book that makes 60 Koeksisters for you and your guests to savour the taste of the Cape.

  • 750g (6 cups) cake flour
  • 30ml (6 tsp) sugar
  • 2.5ml (1/2 tsp) salt
  • 5ml (1tsp) baking powder
  • 10g (1 pkt) instant yeast
  • 20ml (tsp) fine cardamom
  • 8ml (1½ level tsp) fine ginger
  • 30ml (2 Tbsp) fine cinnamom
  • 7.5ml (1½ tsp) naartjie peel
  • 30 ml (2 Tbsp) aniseed
  • 1 egg
  • 15ml (1 Tbsp) oil
  • 30ml (2 Tbsp) butter/margarine
  • 375ml (1½ cup) boiling water
  • 375ml (1½ cup) milk

2. Melt butter in boiling water and mix milk.
3. To dry ingredients add egg, oil and milk-water mixture.
4. Mix thoroughly to form a soft dough.

One out of every five persons on this planet is a Muslim.  He is your neighbour, customer, supplier, employee, boss or friend.

Waqf in the Arabic language means holding, confinement or prohibition. It is used as a means of confining philanthropic benefit disposition outside the specified objective.

The Azhar Masjid (Mosque) in Egypt was founded over a thousand years ago and is one of the largest and most elaborate institutions of higher learning in history. Students from every part of the world come to study there and are even entitled to a monthly allowance. Throughout the mosque’s history, all the services it provides have been funded by the revenues from individual Waqf.

Zubaida´s Waterway in Makkah (Mecca) was a Waqf initiated by Zubaida, the wife of the famous Muslim Caliph Haroun al Rashid. She ordered a channel to be dug directing water to the holy city of Mecca ensuring pilgrims to have free access to water during their Hajj. Many wealthy Muslims also participated by staking a Waqf around the channel providing services to the pilgrims.

Interesting "bites" to whet the appetite for knowledge.

21 Million is the number of Muslims in China. There are 30.000 mosques and 40,000 Imaams in the country. Last year 21,000 Chinese pilgrims performed Hajj.

Seed Capital

In financial jargon seed capital is the financial assistance arranged for new entrepreneurs towards their start up. But seeds play a vital role in our physical make up too.

Whoever would have thought that there's a world of goodness locked up in the humble pumpkin seed?

Or that linseeds would prove to be an important source of omega-3 fatty acids - fats that deserve celebrity status due to the positive effect they have on the body.

Linseeds, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds and sunflower seeds can add variety to your diet and give your health a boost.

So, opt for that seedloaf next time or make a point of sprinkling a few seeds onto your breakfast cereal in the morning.

Health and Beauty

Look good - feel good. Tips for a sound mind in a sound body.

Honey is the oldest sweetening substance known to man. Discovered even in Egyptian pyramids, it was recorded to have been used by Cleopatra. References have been found in Sanskrit and the Scriptures including the Qur´aan. Here is a simple scrub by the National Honey Association.

Honey Cleansing Scrub

  • 1 Tablespoon honey
  • 2 Tablespoons finely ground almonds
  • 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice

Mix all ingredients. Rub gently onto face. Rinse off with warm water.
