TRANSPARENCY
IN ACTION
Giving
effect to one of its founding objectives
of being transparent, SANHA
once again hosted it’s Annual General
Meeting open to the public on Saturday,
5th June 2010 at the Hartley Road School
in Durban.
Much
to the delight of its supporters, SANHA
officials took to the podium one by one
and stood in the spotlight under the full
glare of public scrutiny and delivered
their reports.
In
a feat rarely emulated by other organizations
and certifying bodies, SANHA
once again presented its report and disclosed
its audited financials to the public which
were included in the handouts.
Some
salient features from the report were:-
5230
inspections were conducted during the
year
1140 plants are now certified by SANHA
230 Muslim employees directly and indirectly
46 Abattoirs now approved
R8.5 million expenses were not matched
by R8.1 million income.
Workshops were held for Jamiyyathul Ulama,
Sri Lanka, American Halaal Advocates and
Malawi Halaal Department amongst others.
34 826 queries received in the year.
Professor
Syed Salman Nadvi was singled out for
a special Community Appreciation Award
for his monumental contribution, community
activities, encouragement and support
of Islamic organizations.
The
key note address was delivered by the
eminent Moulana Ebrahim Bham, Secretary
General of the Jamiatul Ulama South Africa.
The focal points were expressing support
and joy for progress of others, co-operation
with all in the furtherance of Deen and
cultivating steadfastness against intolerance.
SANHA
appreciates the support it receives from
the community and pledges to continue
upholding the tradition of transparency
and openness, Insha Allah. (God Willing)

The
Story of our Beginning, the Present and
the Future
RESERVOIR
HILLS MUSLIM SOCIETY (RHMS)
Reservoir
Hills is a suburb of the city of Durban
in South Africa. It was established in the
early 1960’s as an “Indian”
area in line with the then Nationalist Government’s
apartheid policy. No provision was made
for places of worship.
The
inaugural meeting of the Reservoir Hills
Muslim Society was held on 12th March 1964
when a small group of concerned residents
met to determine how to meet the cultural
and religious needs of the Muslim residents
of Reservoir Hills. Their main concern was
the establishment of a Masjid and Madrasah.
Today,
the Society has, by the Grace of Allah,
made phenomenal strides with the establishment
of a Masjid, Madrasah, preschool and various
much needed community facilities.
Amongst
this are Hifz classes, the arranging of
Eidgah prayers and Ghusl and Kafan (washing
and shrouding) requirements of the deceased.
The society is associated with SANHA
and fully supports its activities.
A project of the Reservoir Hills Muslim
Society is the Madrasah Mothers Committee
who, in a decade of tireless work, were
responsible for establishing the magnificent
Reservoir Hills Islamic centre (see photo
Gallery).
This
new centre houses madrasah classes from
grade 1 to 8 with 8 teachers catering for
70 pupils. Income derived from hiring of
the hall is ploughed back into the society
to help make it self sufficient.
The
hall situated at the corner of Mountbatten
and Halpin Avenue, Reservoir Hills, seats
400 in a dining reception setting, is fully
air conditioned and has easy access support
facilities for banqueting. It is proving
to be popular as a wedding venue and has
been selected for an international family
reunion. Click here to

(Sayings
and Traditions of the Prophet Muhammad
peace be upon him)
The
cornerstone of Islamic teachings in this
area is the requirement that we do not
cause anyone any hurt through our words
or actions.
A
famous hadith states, "A Muslim is
the one from whose hands and tongue other
Muslims are safe." [Sahih Muslim].
Keeping
others safe from our hands and tongues
does not only mean that we do not hurl
stones or abuses at them, it also means
that we do not say or do anything that
will hurt them.
This
hadith clearly describes this as a defining
trait of a Muslim. While it refers to
"other Muslims," scholars agree
that it is a general requirement that
equally applies to non-Muslims. A person
who, through his intentional or careless
actions or words inflicts unjustified
pain on others is not worthy of being
called a Muslim.

Interesting
"bites" to whet the appetite
for knowledge.
Nothing
can be more international than the human
preoccupation of cooking. Dating back
to 6000 BC, dishes have been developed
in various areas of the world. Here are
a few of them:
Indian:
Vindaloo – cooked in curry sauce
with ginger and chilli.
Middle
Eastern: Hummus – dip made
from pureed chickpeas.
Spanish
and Latin American: Paella –
seasoned rice dish with chicken, shellfish,
and often vegetables.
Greek:
Tzatziki – cucumber and yoghurt
salad or dip with oil, vinegar, and garlic.

- I would like to know if the Mielie
Kip Chicken Viennas are Halaal?
A
- Kindly note that Mielie
Kip Chicken Viennas are NOT
Halaal.
Q - I have heard that non
Muslims customers are allowed to
bring their own wine when eating
at Ocean Basket Marine Parade.
A
- A blatant untruth as the outlet
is certified as Halaal. SANHA
does not allow consumption of alcohol
at Halaal certified premises.

Your
discovery column of spectacular
spice, fabulous fruit, incredible
ingredient, vital vegetable, marvelous
mineral and vibrant vitamin.
Acetic
Acid
A
clear, colourless organic acid
with a distinctive pungent odour,
used as a solvent and in the manufacture
of rubber, plastics, acetate fibers,
pharmaceuticals, and photographic
chemicals. It is the principal
component of vinegar which is
used in cooking, as a preservative
and flavouring agent in foods
such as mayonnaise and pickles.
The strength of acetic acid varies
considerably with each type of
vinegar. The level required in
table vinegar ranges from 4 to
8 percent and up to18 percent
for pickling. White vinegar is
often used as a household cleaning
agent. Because it is acidic, it
can dissolve mineral deposits
from glass, coffee makers and
other smooth surfaces.
Vinegar
has been made and used by people
for thousands of years. Traces
of it have been found in Egyptian
urns dating from around 3000 BC.
Evidence shows that it was in
use in China during the Xia Dynasty,
around 2000 BC. In the 8th century,
Muslim alchemist Jabir Ibn Hayyan
(Geber) was the first to concentrate
acetic acid from vinegar through
distillation. See
Know Islam column.
SANHA
accepts all vinegars including
cider vinegars, herb vinegars,
rice vinegar, cane vinegar etc.
to be Halaal unless there is added
non-Halaal ingredient which would
alter the products Halaal status.
Even wine vinegars are permitted
since the Jurists of Islamic Law
have established in the Light
of Prophetic traditions that the
changes and transformation through
the process of oxidation renders
the product acceptable.

Look
good - feel good. Tips for
a sound mind in a sound
body.
DECRY
THE BELOVED VUVUZELA
A
sound blast from a vuvuzela
from 2 meters away measures
131 decibels, the equivalent
to standing 100m away from
a jet taking off. This far
exceeds the 85 decibels
threshold regarded as potentially
dangerous for the nerve
cells in the ear. A more
than twenty minutes exposure
to excessive sound of this
level on a prolonged basis
can cause headache, tinnitus
(ringing in the ear) and
short term hearing loss
according to audiologists.
Ensure
that you and especially
children are equipped with
good quality ear plugs to
withstand the cacophony
of the vuvuzela.
Raising
the team spirit while lowering
your hearing is playing
the man not the ball. HEAR!
