No. 57

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

53 years ago to the week, signaled the start of the space race between the two super powers, the USA and Soviet Union with the launching of the world's first artificial satellite, the Sputnik.

Such was the effect on the psyche of the American public by the Soviet Union's stunning move that some went into denial calling it hoax and others tried to justify coming second place with the remarks such as "their Germans are better than our Germans". This was in reference to the fact that the space exploration programme of the two countries, was driven by the capturing of advanced German rocket technology and personnel at the end of World War 2 by these superpowers.

But from sputnik to yoghurt? There are two views in the Islamic world on the Halaal status of gelatin that is used in the manufacture of yoghurts. Some Ulama contend that a drastic metamorphic change described in Islamic jurisprudence as Tabdeelul Mahiyat occurs during the production process thereby rendering the impure collagenous tissue into Halaal gelatin protein. Those that follow this ruling are entitled to do so in keeping with their individual responsibility and accountability with the Creator. However, SANHA and a majority of Ulama locally and internationally hold fast to the view that Halaal gelatin can only be made from material of Halaal animals slaughtered according to Shariah laws.

When Parmalat whose yoghurt were certified with SANHA since 2000 decided in their own words "that due to reformulation of its yoghurts in order to promote affordability to the millions of consumers who enjoy Parmalat yoghurt on a daily basis, its yoghurt will no longer be SANHA HALAAL certifiable," and opted for use of the gelatin from non-Halaal slaughtered animals, SANHA was obliged to inform the consumer.

This evoked the "sputnik" reaction from some quarters with comments of "Are SANHA Moulana's superior to ours" and "why don't your Scholars sit with our Scholars" "As a layman do I follow one of the Sheikhs of the Middle East, Muftis of Pakistan or the Imams of Malayasia?" etc.

We reiterate that this difference is not one of regions of the so called North and South divide (which we do not subscribe to) or Madhaab of Hanafi or Shafi or superiority of a Scholar of Islam of one country over another, nor can one proclaim another's ruling as Haraam. Instead let us draw a lesson from the experience of the Haj, the largest peace time assembly on earth. People of all nations, political persuasions, cultures and traditions, speaking a multitude of languages gather in the Holy Lands and rise above these differences in their common quest to worship Almighty Allah. Let the Islamic spirit of tolerance or quiet abstention triumphs over undisciplined emotion and useless debates which do not serve the cause of unity.

In this matter as with others, we say follow the organisation or Ulama in whom you have placed your trust in for all your religious dietary matters. Whilst respecting the right of others to hold a different opinion, let there be UNITY IN DIVERSITY.

The Story of our Beginning, the Present and the Future

Voice of the Musim Youth
A magazine for the Youth, by the Youth

The journey began in January 2009; the idea of initiating South Africa's first ever Muslim Youth Magazine began to take shape. Conceptualized by just two Matric students, the first issue was launched by mid-June 2009, Alhamdulillah.

The purpose of this publication centres around one core objective: TO GIVE THE MUSLIM YOUTH A VOICE!

Secondary objectives include:
1) To reignite the spirit of writing and reading in our communities.
2) To create a communication link between the youth and everyone else (parents, teachers, community leaders etc).

Our communities are being bombarded with a variety of Islamic magazines, but there remain none who are dedicated to the youth- the very most elementary segment of society.

We are here to provide that, to rekindle the flame of spirituality which is slowly ebbing away from the hearts of our younger generations.

Voice of the Muslim Youth is a supporter of SANHA's initiatives

(Sayings and Traditions of the Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him)

Ibn 'Abbas radiyallahu 'anhumaa narrated:

"Rasulullah sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam answered the call of nature. He returned and they offered him food. They asked, "Shall we not bring you water to perform Wudu (ritual ablution)?" "I have only been ordered to perform Wudu for Salaah," he replied.

COMMENT: Mawlana Zakariyya Kandalwi comments:
Ritual Wudu is only necessary for Salaah. It is not necessary before eating or immediately after relieving oneself. Rasulullaah sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam did not perform wudu lest it be perceived that performing Wudu after visiting the toilet is compulsory.

Cook up a storm with Chicken Fillet with Yoghurt

There is nothing more contentious than the commercial poultry issue and of late the differing views on Yoghurt. To sink your teeth into this we have turned to a recipe from Taalimun Nisa Association of Stanger published in Cooking Food with Flair which uses both these items as principal ingredients for you to chew on.

  • 500g chicken fillet - (for a list of SANHA certified/approved poultry abattoirs click here
  • 1/2 dessert spoon ginger garlic
  • 1 tsp chilli powder
  • 1/2 turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp jeero powder
  • 125 ml natural yoghurt (for a list of SANHA certified yoghurt manufacturers click here
  • Juice of 1/2 lemon
  • 2 small tomatoes, liquidized
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 4 Tbs ghee
  • 1 small green pepper, cubed
  • 1 pinch saffron diluted in 2 Tbs water

1. Braise onion in ghee until golden brown

2. Add all ingredients to chicken and cook until tender.

Interesting "bites" to whet the appetite for knowledge.

Yoghurt in some form or the other has entrenched itself in the local cuisine of various countries and cultures. Here are a few of them:-

Sumatra - Dadiah made from water buffalo milk.

Germany - Rahmyoghurt with a 10% fat content is available in Germany.

Iran - Doogh, a salty yoghurt based drink.

India - Raita is a yoghurt based condiment seasoned with coriander, mint, cumin and cayenne pepper. Popular as a side dish.

In the serious world of Halaal, we take this moment to bring you a smile, a chuckle or even a hearty laugh. It's therapeutic, so pass it on:

A senior citizen drove his car into a ditch. A traffic officer who was in the nearby vicinity went to the accident scene immediately and found a shaken old grandfather figure behind the wheel. The old man told him, "It was horrible Officer, here I was driving along and when I looked up I suddenly saw this tree in the middle of the road. I swung the wheel to avoid it only to find another tree in front of the vehicle. I swerved and braked only to see a third tree. With my years of driving experience I tried to execute a handbrake turn manoeuvre but suddenly my car was in the ditch. Thank Almighty I survived."

The officer looked around the quiet road, stuck his head inside the car and said to the man "The trees you were avoiding was the air freshener on your rear view mirror."

The African Perception of Allah - The Sotho

Notwithstanding Africa's diversity of tribes, cultural patterns and the legacy of colonialism, most of the Continent still holds true the concept of Monotheism.

In our last Bulletin we spoke of the Zulus. In the Sotho group of languages of Southern Africa, the traditional name of Allah is "Ramasedi" which means "He from who comes light". This name which is used in the context of an attribute, bears a similar connotation as the attribute of Allah, an-Noor (The Light).

Q. An email is going around that says Nandos in the UK is sourcing poultry from commercial abattoirs which are Haraam and that the situation is the same with South African abattoirs.

A. SANHA is not the certifier of Nandos here nor in the UK and cannot comment on that over which we have no jurisdiction. The allegation made in the email regarding abattoirs in South Africa is baseless. As per the testimony of our Ulama all abattoirs certified / approved by SANHA comply with the requirements of Islamic Ritual Slaughter.

Sodium Caseinate

Commercial manufacturers control the dry matter in their yoghurt to ensure consistency of production. One of the methods is the use of the sodium salt of casein, a milk protein. In powder form its functional properties are water binding, emulsification, whitening and whipping. It is also used in coffee whiteners, non dairy whipped toppings, processed meats and desserts.
