In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

RAMADAAN, Month of Brotherhood & Unification

Ramadaan, the blessed month of innumerable benefits gives effect to the third pillar of Islam, i.e fasting.

During this period, the Muslims do not partake of any food, drink or indulge in conjugal relations from dawn to sunset. Muslims engage in additional prayer and increase deeds of charity during this time. It was prescribed by Allah Almighty to the Holy Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) and the Prophets that preceded him. It is highly recommended that the poor, hungry and the orphans are not forgotten and are given due attention in keeping with his example.

The level of piety and motivation for good deeds is intensified due to the unity of action where all, whether king or commoner, scholar or soldier, boss or servant, young or old, carry out their duties in unison.

Allah Ta’ala has told the Believers to “hold fast, all together, by the rope of Allah” and not “to be divided among themselves and to remember with gratitude Allah’s favour on them, for they were enemies, and Allah joined their hearts in love, so that by His grace, they have become brethren, and they were on the brink of the pit of fire, and He saved them from it.” (Surah 3 Verse 103)

Surely this global united action is the example of unity that is witnessed in Ramadaan. Physical Unity in the sense that all Muslims regardless of artificial differences and the disparities of language, colour, country of all origin and backgrounds share one thing. They all fast from dawn to sun-set. They worship one Almighty God. They supplicate to Allah alone. They have the same feelings of hunger and thirst. Then it is out of this physical unity that their hearts are joined and brought together. We therefore move from the outer to the inner, from the façade and outer appearance to the essence and kernel. This is the beauty of Islam where an external action has a higher goal as it ultimately binds the various members of society together. Ramadaan weaves the hearts of people together.

Why can we not draw deeply from the experience of this Divine practical lesson of Ramadaan and redouble the efforts to be a united Ummah in the inevitable cycle of life.

On behalf of our officials, staff, well wishers and certified plants we wish all an uplifting Ramadaan of peace and prayer.

The Story of our Beginning, the Present and the Future

In 1986, in a small garage in Pietermaritzburg with a carpet on the floor, a Braille (Perkins) typewriter and an Arabic Braille Qaaida (Primer), a little Madrassa started with one student and a teacher on an entirely special mission…

Some parents felt a pressing need for special classes that would cater for the Islamic and cultural education of their Blind children. This challenge was taken up by the establishment of Madrassa An Noor for the Blind.

Within a year three students completed the reading of the Qur’aan by their fingers. Thereafter, a few students started to memorize the Holy Qur’aan (Hafiz ul Qur’aan). Our activities expanded when we began producing ‘Talking Books’, (audio Tapes/Cd’s) recorded at our studio and began printing Braille books at our fully computerized Braille press.

These books were then sent by “Free Post” to our young and adult blind members internationally.

We then transformed into an Institute of Higher learning or Darul Uloom when a young female student and a young blind boy all the way from Thailand indicated their wish to become Aalim and Aalima. This was a challenging journey for us, as it required that every Arabic text-book in the course be transcribed into Braille. Alhamdulillah, our efforts were rewarded when our first male and female Ulama graduated in 2004.

We were also on many occasions approached by persons from various parts of the world requiring assistance in establishing a Madrassa for the blind in their countries. The well then travelled to quench the thirst of the thirsty. We began conducting Qur’aanic Braille workshops in different parts of the world with the purpose of training sighted and blind Qur’aan teachers so that they be empowered to assist the blind by establishing classes in their own localities.

As a mother institute, we support these internationally established Madaaris with curriculum, advice post their feedback and provide full back-up.

Having outgrown our premises, we relocated in 2011 to our new home which is situated at a farm in Cedara, 17kms north of Pietermaritzburg.

At our new Home, our approach to the education of our students is more holistic. Together with academic learning, we provide other basic skills development programmes like Orientation Mobility, guide animals to facilitate independence and movement, sports and recreation to strengthen the body and mind and farming to afford our students awareness of nature as well as knowledge of subsistence living.

The building plans for the second phase are being finalized. Our Master plan includes a Masjid, education blocks, male / female boarding blocks, Hall, staff quarters, service shops, sports, recreation and farming facilities. Our Masjid will cater for travelers using the adjoining N3 Durban - Johannesburg freeway. Easy off-ramp access from both directions will make it easy for families to perform their Salaah and to refresh themselves at our Islamic oasis.

Please do visit us at Madrassa An-Noor. We request your Duaa’s and for your contributions to our project.

Madrassa An-Noor is an associate member of SANHA and we wish them well in their endeavours.

(Sayings and Traditions of the Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him)

Yunus al-Askaaf narrates:

Qataadah narrated that Anas bin Maalik radiyallahu ‘anhu said, “Nabiullah sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam never ate at a table, nor from Sukurrujah nor did he eat thin bread.”

I asked Qataadah, “On what did they eat?”

Qataadah replied, “On a mat on the ground.”

Sukurrujah are tiny dishes which we use for condiments etc. Sufrah or Maaidah is a mat spread on the ground for meals. Also called Dastarkhaan in Persian.

Mawlana Zakariya Kandalwi comments:

Al-‘Allamah al-Manaawi and Mullaa ‘Ali al-Qaari say that it has always been the custom of proud people to eat at tables. It has been stated in al-Kawkab ad- Durri it is Makruh Tahreemi because it is also an imitation of the Christians.

Undisputed Pie Champion

Pies still represent one of the highest value for money food item available today and favoured by people from all religious, cultural and income groups.

And if any pie has earned the right to be the undisputed champion then Bread Ahead must wear the crown.

Dropping in at the flagship headoffice in Problem Mkhize Road, formerly Cowie Road, my radar nose led me to the pie counter with their signature range and variants of chicken a la king, chicken curry, pepper steak, mutton curry, vegetable curry and steak and kidney.

The pepper steak and 500ml Pepsi cost a “petty cash snip” R19,95. And the pie, without doubt with its full 120 gram filling of prime steak oozing gravy with real peppercorn and freshly baked has no challenger in sight.

The service was ultra fast, the credit card was gladly accepted for a “petty” amount and the free seating on the pavement watching the world go by is a definite ringside seat I would like to occupy often as I engage the champions.

Did I mention that they are SANHA certified? Off course you knew that.

In the serious world of Halaal, we take this moment to bring you a smile, a chuckle or even a hearty laugh. It's therapeutic, so pass it on:

As regular travellers know it is common to meet up with all types of people during a journey. At a stopover at London’s Heathrow airport an American and a Korean passenger got chatting. The American in a drawl says, “Hi! Japanese fella, I am John Goldberg from Alabama and where yo heading boy?” The Korean replies, “I is Kim Jung Lee from Seoul and happy to go to USA.” And after some further polite exchanges both travellers read their magazines.

All of a sudden the American slaps the Korean very hard and his eyes start watering. Startled, the Korean says angrily, “what you do that for? For Pearl harbour, yes you Japanese caused that” said the American. The Korean protests his innocence and says. “I told you I am Korean, not Japanese.” “Makes no difference, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, you all are the same, buck teeth, dark hair, yellow skin and slit eyes. I don’t trust any of you Orientals.”

Stung by this reply and humiliated the Korean sulks in silence. However ten minutes later without warning the Korean lets out a yell and slaps the American so hard that he falls off the bench. The American picks himself up and says, “what the heck did you do that for?” “That I do because of what happen to Titanic.” The American protests, “but, but, that’s ridiculous, the Titanic was sunk by iceberg,” he cries? “Makes no difference, Goldberg, Rosenberg, Ginsberg, Iceberg, you all same, white, cold and destroy everything. I don’t trust you."

SANHA believes that Science with its methodology is an intrinsic part of effective Halaal certification and hence its links with scientific organizations and employment of an in-house regulatory chemist, Alhamdulillah! Our chemist, Brother Salim Shaikjee participated in the International Training for Halaal Certifying Bodies programme, which was held in Bogor City, West Java-Indonesia, from 16th - 22nd June 2011, This programme was conducted by LPPOM-MUI, an institution formed by the Majlis Ulama Indonesia to regulate the issuing of Halaal certificates in Indonesia. A total of 23 certifiers from 18 different countries participated in the programme.

Three days of the training was devoted to theory and two days to practical auditing. The theory sessions covered the Halaal Assurance System that certified companies are required to implement and the types of ingredients and processing aids used in foods, cosmetics, and medications which are of concern from a Halaal perspective.

SANHA benefited by gaining insight into how Halaal certification is conducted in Indonesia and had an opportunity to share information on critical food ingredients and processing aids.
