In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

In upholding its tradition of good governance through transparency and openness, SANHA hosted its Annual General Meeting to the public on Saturday, 10th September 2011.

The meeting widely advertised in the media, was held in Fordsburg and was attended by 129 people. SANHA once again walked the walk by its officials presenting their reports and handing out the audited financial statements to all attendees.

The keynote address was delivered by eminent Islamic Scholar, Moulana Ahmed Suleman Chohan of Durban. The Moulana who has a long history of service to the community is a founding member and Principal of the Islaahul Muslimaat Madrassah of Sherwood in Durban. He is also a trustee of the influential Al Imdaad Foundation that is involved with disaster relief and humanitarian aid.

Moulana Mohammed Kaka of Lenasia deservedly received the SANHA community recognition award for his tireless and long service towards upliftment of Islam particularly in the field of education, leadership and welfare.

In the elections that followed, the following were elected to office:

CHAIRMAN - Moulana Yusuf Patel : Jamiatul Ulama of South Africa

VICE CHAIRMAN - Moulana Mohammed Suliman: Central Islamic Trust

SECRETARY - Brother Mohammed Seedat: Association of Muslim Accountants and Lawyers

TREASURER - Brother Riaz Jalal: Durban Muslim Traders Association

SANHA wishes to thank the community for their unwavering support and pledges to continue serving you in a manner that pleases Allah Ta’ala best.

AGM MESSAGES part one of three

"So eat of the sustenance which Allah has provided for you, lawful and good; and be grateful for the favours of Allah, if it is He whom ye serve." (Surah An-Nahl, Verse114)

We give praise and thank Allah Ta’ala for the privilege of serving the Ummah and the support of our many brother organisations and well wishers.

We reproduce some excerpts from their messages received for our AGM.

Jazakumullah Khairan

I am supportive and endorse SANHA’s activities in ensuring that people consume Halaal and trade only in Halaal. By people I mean all mankind (not just believers) as stipulated in the noble Quran. One of my strategies of my da’wah over the years was inviting people to my home where over the barakah of a Halaal meal friendships were formed. Many a journey to Islam began with a morsel of Halaal food.

I offer you the following advices:

SANHA and all Islamic Organisations must double their efforts in the face of onslaught we face worldwide today.

Do not compromise on Halaal or be discouraged by detractors. Remember, if there are no rumblings then you are not doing your job.

Wishing SANHA’s officials every success and pray that Allah (SWT) accepts the efforts.

Yousuf Ahmed Deedat quoting his father Sheik Ahmed Deedat’s previous message to SANHA.

We sincerely express our heartfelt congratulations to your past and future achievements as national halal authority. We are sure that all these proceedings will be conducted in a usual brotherly manner while guided by the Holy Qur'an and the and Sunnah.

Please express our heartfelt congratulations to all the officers and members of SANHA as we hope and pray that you will continue to achieve the best in this world and in the Hereafter.

It is reassuring to note the positive and open approach that SANHA takes with regards to its inner affairs and workings, together with the extremely valuable and essential conduct of the “outward” affairs with respect to checking and certifying foods and consumption matters for the Muslim community at large.

Do continue to carry out this vital service and in so doing, may The Almighty Allah Subhanahu Wa Taala continue to grant increase and shower blessings upon all the Ummah at large and particularly to the hard workers and dedicated personnel of your whole organisation.

(Sayings and Traditions of the Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him)

Urwah RA narrated:

‘Umar bin Abi Salmah radiyallahu ‘anhu went to Rasulullah sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam and found him eating. He said, “Come, my son. Recite the name of Allah. Eat what is closest to you with your right hand.”

Comment: Ulama are unanimous that it is Sunnah to recite, “Bismillah,” before eating. These words are also most authentic from the Hadith compared to longer versions.

Al-Imaam Ibn Maajah narrates that Rasulullah sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said, “Shaytaan eats with the left hand. Therefore do not eat with the left hand.”

Whilst we take it for granted that we eat with the right hand and clean ourselves with the left, such basic hygiene is only part of our lives due to the beautiful teachings of Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.

Eating the food closest to oneself is also amongst the refinements of character based upon the Sunnah.

Reference: Ash-Shamaail lit-Tirmizii, Chapter on what Rasulullah sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said before and after eating.

French Onion Soup

Request for Recipe – See Readers Write

Indeed the Carlton Hotel in the lofty Carlton Tower which opened in 1972, is South Africa’s tallest building and changed Johannesburg’s skyline forever.

The restaurant that won acclaim for its cuisine was the Three Ships. We could not find their menu from way back but surmise from talking to some of our seniors, your description (See Readers Write) and the popular soup fare of restaurants of this standing, you were served French Onion Soup (Soup á l’ oignon).

Of ancient origins and still in huge demand due to the popularity of French cuisine, its main component is caramelised onions in a hearty beef stock finished (unfortunately) with white wine.

Here is a recipe suitably adapted for Muslim dietary requirements. Make it yourself – fresh with no wine or other Haraam ingredients. Enjoy!

Cook time: 60-70 minutes

• 6 large red or yellow onions peeled and thinly sliced.
• Olive oil.
• 1/4 teaspoon of sugar.
• 2 cloves garlic, minced.
• 8 cups of beef stock, chicken stock or a combination of the two (traditionally the soup is made with beef stock. I use the Knorr stock cubes which are certified by SANHA).
• 1 Bay leaf
• 1/4 teaspoon of dry thyme.
• Salt and pepper
• 8 slices of toasted French bread.
• 1 1/2 cups of grated cheese with a little grated Parmesan cheese.

1. In a large saucepan, sauté the onions in the olive oil on medium high heat until well browned, but not burned, about 30-40 minutes (or longer). Add the sugar about 10 minutes into the process to help with the caramelization. Proper caramelization is an important element and brings the sweetness.

2. Add garlic and sauté for 1 minute. Add the stock, bay leaf and thyme. Cover partially and simmer until the flavours are well blended, about 30 minutes. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Discard the bay leaf.

3. To serve you can either use individual oven-proof soup bowls or one large casserole dish. Ladle the soup into the bowls or casserole dish. Cover with the toast and sprinkle with the cheese. Put under the grill for 5 minutes at 180ºC, or until the cheese bubbles and is slightly browned. Serve immediately.

Kababish and Kurry Restaurant

If you veer off the M1 South onto the Xavier Road off ramp and then right as I did in Johannesburg the other day, I came across Evan’s Park Masjid still under construction. A beautiful expression of Islam and testimony to the dedicated Muslim community.

A few hundred metres further stands the quaint little village style Crownwood Square Centre and the sight of food beckoned, the object of attention was Kababish and Kurry Restaurant.

With four hungry travellers in tow, there was no time to critique aspects of décor, ambience and so on. I focused on the certification and was satisfied to see a current SANHA Halaal certificate on the wall.

With time of the essence, we went for the Mutton Karahi special at R160-00. The final result was about 1kg of very tender Mutton served with ten rotis, salad and sour milk, enough to serve four very hungry wayfarers or six not so hungry. Its knockout value.

Interesting "bites" to whet the appetite for knowledge.

Pakistan’s legendary batsmen strike with the meat of the bat.

Batting legends Inzamam-ul-Haq and Saeed Anwar, who once used to butcher bowlers, are now bringing their meat brands to Dubai with the opening of two branches.

Both cricketers used to please fans with their aggressive and innovative shot-making and their meat brand will not disappoint. Instead of square cuts or late cuts, they will now provide quality offerings such as ‘Tikka cut’, ‘Karachi cut’ and ‘Biryani cut’ at their shops.

“Our main aim is to bring their trusted brand, ‘Meat One’, of best quality fresh ‘halal meat’ to people here,” said Asif Jabbar, Group CEO of Alif Investment, a Dubai-based company, which has got exclusive rights for Meat One for the UAE and other GCC countries.

Instant hit

“Meat One is an interesting one-stop meat shop as it not only provides a variety of meat including beef, mutton and chicken but will also offer ready to cook marinated meat items,” said Jabbar. The brand has been an instant hit in Karachi with nine outlets in the city opened in just one year.

“Dubai is his [Inzamam's] first international venture and we are also planning to open outlets in Saudi Arabia and Qatar soon followed by other Gulf countries,” said Jabbar.

In the serious world of Halaal, we take this moment to bring you a smile, a chuckle or even a hearty laugh. It's therapeutic, so pass it on:

Moulana, the meteorologist

A major construction company had to build a massive bridge for a new highway passing a small village. As the site foreman introduced himself to the village elders, the humble old Imaam of the village said to him, “Tomorrow there will be a massive storm.” Sure enough, the next day it was a mother of all storms that delayed construction for couple of days. Thereafter the company consulted with the Imaam regularly and each time his predictions were 100% correct.

"This Moulana fellow is amazing," said the director of the company who had by now heard about the Imaam and his predictions, “It’s uncanny how accurate he is with his predictions.” He told his secretary to hire the Moulana at any cost to predict the weather for them especially with a major phase coming up. But the elderly Moulana firmly maintained that, “I cannot and will not accept money to share any knowledge that benefits the Ummah. Please tell your director saheb not to embarrass me by offering me money for this simple duty.”

The Director shows up personally at his door and thanks him and tells him the biggest and most complex phase of the entire construction was scheduled for the next day when a fleet of trucks would descend from the city to pour in thousands of tons of concrete and the conditions had to be just perfect. “I am relying on you, what will the weather be like?”

The Moulana shrugging his shoulders says, “I don’t know. No Radio Islam. My decoder broke down and I usually get weather reports from Radio Islam.”

One out of every five persons on this planet is a Muslim. He is your neighbour, customer, supplier, employee, boss or friend.

The cornerstone of Islamic teaching is that there is only ONE God who is The Creator of all. It rejects characterizing God in any form. Of God it is stated in the Quran in chapter 112, “Say (O Muhammad to humanity), He is God, the One and only God. The Everlasting, The Absolute. He begets not, nor was He begotten, and there is none equal or like unto Him.”

All Prophets came and preached that God is One. In the Bible in Mark: 12:29 Prophet Jesus (Essa) [peace be upon him] said: “Hear O Israel, the Lord our God is one Lord”.
