No. 68

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

In an urgent court action brought by the Red Meat Industry Forum of South Africa, SANHA and 15 of its honorary members, an interdict was granted against a massive fraud case of Haraam passed off as Halaal.

The Orion Cold Storage Company of Cape Town stood accused of the following despicable deeds:-

1. Importation of Irish and Belgian pork products and re-labelling them as Halaal sheep/veal products.

2. Importation of Australian Kangaroo meat and re-labelling it as Halaal beef trimmings.

3. Importation of Canadian dairy powder for animal feed and re-labelling it as Halaal skim milk powder.

4. Importation of non Halaal Spanish poultry products and re-labelling them as Halaal.

Their denial, claims of being certified by the Muslim Judicial Council (MJC) and that sixty percent of their clientele were Muslim, were scuppered and sunk by the SANHA legal team firing salvo after salvo of evidence. Notwithstanding the interdict granted against them, the MJC revoking its certificate, criminal charges being laid by the public and the outcry against them, the company has not accepted responsibility, tendered any sincere apology, shown any remorse or taken positive action towards prevention of same and reparation.

Is this the tip of the iceberg on the importation of meats of dubious source into our country? Based on its many observations of practices in the countries exporting meat to South Africa, from inception over a decade and half ago, SANHA has not approved of any imports. It does not accept nor condone certification granted at port of entry on “paper verification” of certificates granted by foreign certifiers whose bonafides and standards are questionable and who are visited once in several years. This saga of devious deception vindicates our position.

Interestingly, with Orion blown out of the water, a “divers club” has emerged in the wake of the scandal. Politicians and organizations are “diving in” with false claims to have been part of our legal action, calling for national meetings and introducing legislation and so on. Sincere iniatives will always be welcomed whilst those with questionable motives will find themselves in deep water.

Don’t run into any icebergs that compromise your Imaan. Anchor in the harbour of success by consuming that which is wholesome and absolutely free of doubt.

We call upon Halaal meat traders, processors and butcheries to work closely with our offices and verify the authenticity of meat/meat products presented to you especially those of imported origin.

The Story of our Beginning, the Present and the Future

Alhamdulillah! By the Grace of the Almighty the Muslim community in the South of Johannesburg has grown substantially over the years. From a few families in the early nineties to almost 3000 families today and still growing.

The Robertsham Muslim Jamaat established in 1992 built the first Masjid / Madrasah in Kimberly Road, which not only services the surrounding communities but also caters for the travellers on the M2 Motorway. The Jumuah congregation caters for approximately 700 musallees and the pre-school and madrasah has a roll of 260 pupils. The community has also responded to the call of establishing “The Al Huda Girls Academy”, a “Girls only” school which commenced in January 2011 with Class one and will move a grade up each year, Inshâ-Allah. Almost from inception the Jamiat recognised the importance of consuming Halaal and abstaining from Haraam. Accordingly it holds a membership of SANHA and endorses its activities.

The Jamaat has just completed a much needed dedicated Salaah and ablution facility for females and is now embarking on extending the Salaah area by incorporating the courtyard and also extending the male ablution areas to cater for the ever increasing number of musallees, Alhamdulillah.

Accordingly, we would like to extend an offshore ‘aakhirah’ investment opportunity for esaale thawaab for one’s near and dear ones by contributing towards our worthy projects. We extend a warm welcome to all to visit our facilities and request your duas for the successful completion of our projects and that Allah accept our efforts.

Jazakumullah Khairan!

Abu Hurayrah radiyallahu anhu narrated that Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said:

Comment: An apt reminder from the blessed tongue of Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam to reaffirm the good habits of Ramadaan.

So what has an Afrikaner trek have to do with Mochachos?

The only connection is that the first Mochacho store opened in Africa during 1994 offering Mexican flavoured flame grilled chicken. They have come a long way since then with over 60 stores in South Africa and a comprehensive menu from Burgers, Burritos, Nachos, Schwarmas, Ribs and the famous Chicken.

Its lunchtime time, I am on business at the Centurion Mall and spot the familiar Mexican logo on shop number 139. The store is full and I try to slip in quietly but I am greeted with the friendliest of smiles.

I decide not to order their “signature” chicken items as it is obvious that they must do those exceptionally well to develop a chain of stores. I zero in on their Gourmet Beef and cheese burger with additional chips and a 340ml can of Coco Cola which was around R50-00 and started the stopwatch.

Fourteen minutes and a few seconds later my meal was before me. I took a long calming swig of the Coke as I beheld this larger burger in front of me. A poppy seeded bun of about 12cms with what I surmise was a 100g beef burger, topped with a slice of melting cheese, assembled with lettuce, tomato, onion, dill cucumber and smothered in a 1000 island type sauce. Just one bite was enough to punch home the message that it was a burger extraordinaire. The thickly sliced chips with the Mexican style spice were a perfect complement.

A striking aspect though was the Manager/Owner’s (I never found out which) hands on approach to service. He was doing walkabouts and I was “checked on” twice.

For your own extraordinaire no siesta fiesta, go to the Mochachos at Centurion Mall.

Tel: 012 643 1695

They are open till 9pm weekdays and 10pm on weekends.

Interesting "bites" to whet the appetite for knowledge.

Condensed Milk

Condensed milk is a thick sweet product made from cow’s milk where water has been removed and sugar added. Used today as a modern convenience, the process to produce it was patented in the middle of the 19th century. Once the product is canned it would last for years and one would be able to replicate it if it was diluted to the same consistency. It became to enormously popular in the last quarter of the 19th century as houses had not experienced the advent of refrigerators.

All condensed milk produced by Nestle is SANHA certified and carries the SANHA Halaal logo.

Time at the Airport

An airport is a hive of activities and it is fascinating to observe so much going on. Everybody seems to be rushing, some going and some coming. Occasionally, you’ll also see some people looking confused.

One such gentleman was walking around at the airport terminal looking a little distressed. He spots a man with two heavy suitcases and decides to approach him. He said, “I’m sorry to bother you but I really need help. My flight arrived late from Brisbane, I missed the person that I was supposed to meet and my mobile phone battery is dead, so I am totally lost for information. I don’t even know what the time is. What is the time by the way?”

The man puts down the two heavy suitcases and stares at his watch. But this was no ordinary watch! He touches a tiny button and his administrative assistant's face appears. He asks him, "Yusuf what time is it?" Yusuf answers instantly and with a smile! The questioner is thoroughly impressed!!! He asks, "What kind of a watch is that?"

"It's like a high definition TV with two-way real-time communication,” the man explains. He adds that the watch is the latest technology Intel's brand new state of the art high speed processor crammed with incredible features. The traveller is quite impressed and said, “May I ask a few questions of my own.” The brother said, “Why not? Go for it”

He looked into the watch and asked, “Could you please tell me the latest dollar exchange rate and the time at this moment at my home town of Brisbane” Yusuf, just as with the previous question appears on the screen with a smile and provides the answers instantly. The onlooker was so impressed and wanted to know if he could buy this unique watch from the gentleman. After some haggling they agree on a hefty price and the cash was handed over immediately. The gentleman takes his watch out, hands it over, shakes hands and then walks away.

The new owner of the watch stares at the two heavy suitcases and shouts, "Sir, you forgot your suitcases.” The gentleman stops, smiles and replies, "No, they are yours now, they are the modems, antennae, rechargeable battery packs and other equipment for connectivity that you will always need to carry to operate your new watch. I am so glad that I’m not the one carrying those heavy bags around now."

What Does Islam Say About The Day of Judgment

Like Christians, Muslims believe that the present life is only a trial preparation for the next realm of existence. This life is a test for each individual for the life after death. A day will come when the whole universe will be destroyed and the dead will be resurrected for judgment by God. This day will be the beginning of a life that will never end. This day is the Day of Judgment. On that day, all people will be rewarded by Allah according to their beliefs and deeds. Those who die while believing that “There is no true god but Allah, and Muhammad( Peace be upon him) is the Messenger (Prophet) of Allah” will be rewarded on that day for their good deeds and will be admitted to Paradise, as stated in the Noble Quran:

“And those who believe and do good deeds, they are dwellers of Paradise, they dwell therein forever.” (Surah Al Baqarah: Verse 82)

Rice Paper

Paper made from parts of the rice plant. Rice paper has been used for centuries in Vietnam, Korea, China and Japan for writing and artwork.

Edible rice paper is used for making salad rolls or fried spring rolls in Vietnamese cuisine, where the rice paper is called bánh tráng or bánh da nem. Ingredients of the food rice paper include white rice flour, tapioca flour, salt, and water. The tapioca powder makes the rice paper glutinous and smooth. It is usually sold dried in thin, crisp, translucent round sheets that are wrapped in cellophane. The sheets are dipped briefly in hot water to soften them, and then wrapped around savoury or sweet ingredients.

TIP: Use rice paper as a lining material in order to prevent the batter from sticking to the pans when making cupcakes. Unlike liner paper, if edible rice paper is used, one can eat the whole piece even without peeling off the paper cup.

Health and Beauty

The nutritional powerhouse

Diet: Lower blood pressure and curb overeating as one cup translates to only 43 calories and 13% of the RDA of dietary.

Antioxidants: Strawberries contain a chemical compound called phenols. Anthocyanin, a particular phenol abundantly found in strawberries leads to the body's uric acid levels increase, which serves as an antioxidant agent.

The phenols in strawberries also fight against many inflammatory disorders, such as osteoarthritis, asthma and atherosclerosis, by inhibiting the enzyme in the same way that the drugs aspirin and ibuprofen do. This is without the unwanted side effects of stomach and intestinal bleeding.

The combination of antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agents is well-known to fight against the onset of many different forms of cancer. Vitamin C, folate, and the flavonoids quercetin and kaempferol in strawberries are a delicious defense against potentially cancerous cells.

Healthy Eyes
Opthalmology studies have shown that three or more servings of strawberries (and other fruits) per day can decrease the possibility of contracting age-related macular degeneration by over one-third.

The Vigorous Vitamin C
One cup of strawberries contains an incredible 136% of the RDA of vitamin C, an effective antioxidant that can help lower blood pressure, ensure a healthy immune system, and ward off the development of age-related ocular diseases, such as cataracts and macular degeneration.

Magnificent Manganese
One cup of strawberries contains 21% of manganese, an essential nutrient that acts as a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent. By increasing these levels it helps to fight the battle against free radicals, oxidative stress and also lessens cellular inflammation - a cause of numerous cardiovascular diseases.

Bone Health
Manganese helps in bone building and maintaining proper bone structure. The potassium, vitamin K, and magnesium in strawberries are also important for bone health.

POWER OF ALLAH: Allah does as He Wills. Strawberries are the only fruit with the seeds on the outside.
