Consumers right to know

The consumer is not an idiot. Do not try to pull the wool over his eyes. He is you and me, our fathers, mothers, sons, daughters, wives, husbands, family and friends. They do us a great favour each time they purchase a product or service for it contributes to our economy and livelihood. If we claim to represent, serve or profit from them, then we have a legal and moral obligation to ensure that the necessary and relevant information is provided in assisting them to make their choices, by way of labelling, declarations, disclosures and transparency.

For the muslim, the consumption of Halaal is not simply an option but an absolute obligation. This strand of the rope of Halaal which bind us together also presents the greatest challenge because of the enormous diversity. In one third of the world Muslims are in a majority situation and in the rest they live as a minority. They are found in both First World, as well as developing and Third World countries. Without a single cohesive institution such as the Rightly Guided Caliphate of previous times, it progresses by adherence to the Shari’ah.

There is no discrepancy on the primary sources, ie. The Noble Quran as revealed to the final Prophet, Muhammad (Peace be upon him) over one thousand four hundred years ago, preserved unchanged and without corruption in its original and pristine form. This is followed by the Sunnah which consists of the sayings and deeds of the Holy Prophet (Peace be upon him) and is regarded both as explanatory and complementary to the text of the Quran.

There is a secondary source of the Shariah which is described as Juristic opinion of learned Ulama (Theologians) where through a measured and meticulous process, decisions arrived by Ulama through consensus, analogical deduction, personal reasoning, public interest, legal presumptions and customs with final sanction which cannot go contrary to the Divine primary sources above. It is in this area that many differences and rulings occur on the basis that the Ulama of that locality have made the decisions in the best interest of Islam for their respective communities.

The provision of Halaal products and regulatory services understandably experiences similar diversity, with governments of Islamic countries providing this in some instances whilst in minority situations the communities have learnt to rely on themselves through community based organisations. In the case of poultry there are many discrepancies with some accepting machine slaughter, others accepting slaughter by the "People of the Book" and some who accept a single recitation of the Tasmiyah (incantation) at the start of the process. Then there is the question of supply and demand where local halaal bodies grant certification at the port of entry on “paper verification” of the foreign certifiers whose bonafides and standards maybe questionable and who are visited once in several years.

One of the revelations in the grand fraud case brought by SANHA on the unforgivable crime committed by the Orion Cold Storage company in passing off pork and other Haraam products as Halaal, was that during 2011 alone, eighteen containers of chicken were imported by Orion and cleared in the manner described above. Five of these were from Denmark, a country that has done no favour to Islam with cartoons mocking the Prophet (Peace be upon him). It is common industry knowledge that virtually without exception, chickens from Denmark are machine slaughtered.

South Africans as a rule in keeping with the decision reached by their pious Ulama predecessors do not accept mechanical slaughter of poultry which makes it incumbent on the certifying authority, in this case the MJC, and their fellow members of the trinity, the NIHT and ICSA who make up the National Halaal Forum, to ensure that the consumers right to know and exercise their own choices is not impinged. Until such information is made available, consumers should abstain from all imported meats, question the sources at your butcher and even in downstream certification chain such as fast food outlets and pie manufacturers. Demand proper labelling information and do not accept products with vague labelling that merely states that it is specially packed for xyz without any country of origin, or value added products such as ?????? labelling of which conveniently omits the large percentage of foreign raw material and country of origin.

Do not allow your right to know to be hijacked – its a matter of faith.

Report deviations to your Halaal body, Department of trade, consumer body or local Member of Parlaiament.

The Story of our Beginning, the Present and the Future

Musjid ud-Duha, Sandton, Johannesburg

Masjid Duha

During Ramadaan of 2003, Taraweeh Salaah was performed at a home in Morningside. There were approximately 30 – 40 musallees who were resident in and around Sandton attending the Taraweeh Salaah. This prompted increased awareness that the Muslim community in Sandton was growing at a rapid rate and that the creation of an Islamic association in Sandton was a necessity in order to manage and develop a Musallah to cater for the prayer requirements of Musallees as well as address the social needs of the burgeoning Sandton Muslim community.

The Sandton Islamic Association was formulated during that Ramadaan with the primary objective of setting up a musallah in the Sandton area. The association identified the following long term goals:

• Converting the musallah into a mosque
• Establishing a madressah

The Sandton Islamic Association has been successful in meeting these goals and is responsible for establishing the first permanent mosque, known as Musjid ud-Duha, as well as the first permanent madressah in Sandton. The Sandton Islamic Association intends to build on these achievements in order to further serve the needs of the broader Sandton Muslim community.

The objective of the Musjid is to establish a meeting place for Islamic worship and learning. It is an environment conducive to the spiritual development, self-improvement and education of individuals wanting to achieve nearness to Allah (SWT), increase their Islamic knowledge and cultural awareness.

The Musjid property is zoned as a place for religious worship and is located on the corner of Coleraine and Ballyclare Drives. The location of the Musjid makes it easily accessable from the Sandton CBD, Bryanston, Riverclub, Rivonia, Morningside and other surrounding areas.

Musjid ud-Duha has prayer facilities for both men and women and at any point in time can accommodate over 400 musallees for congregational prayer. The Musjid is frequented by men and women working, living and visiting Sandton. The Sandton Islamic Association is proud of its diverse, multicultural congregation and serves over 250 Muslim families from as far as Saxonworld through to Fourways.

ON MY PLATE

Lingering longer or on the move, he stops here, there and everywhere to share what’s on his plate and his mind. He may be in your place soon but you will never know he is there.

MR FISH raises the ‘steaks”

The N2 on the Natal south coast stretches for hundreds of kilometres, with the azure waters of the Indian Ocean breaking on the sun kissed beaches on the east side and lush sugar cane and tropical vegetation to the west. Alhumdullilah! it is a road well-travelled and a kind of a promised land that has become a premier holiday spot and summer playground.

Heading south on this road recently with the family to make our own summer memories, it was a hot and humid day. The air conditioner was working overtime and an hour into the journey my co-pilot (read wife) informs me of a situation with the passengers (read children) who had become restless and needed both bathroom and food. As commander of the mission I have to take action. I pull up next to the sign that states Margate and access the SANHA website via my GSM mobile. I scan through the restaurant listing and find a entry for a Mr. Fish restaurant. I enter the coordinates (nice touch SANHA) listed on the website into my Garmin and immediately another female voice takes over from my dear co-pilot with instructions of her own. Following her commands I am led to Mr. Fish in Marine Drive, in Margate.

It’s a quaint little thirty seater diner with a deck, owned and operated by a hands on couple, Muntashir better known as Gustav and Auntie Julie. Everybody seemed to know them and they in turn flitted around from table to table as if each diner was a family member having a meal at their home. While Auntie Julie and the wife got the bathroom side sorted out, Gustav’s noticed my predicament in making a decision from the wide menu. He recommended the family platter which has been a hit with the locals and visitors. Being the “carnivore” that I am I took the liberty of also ordering a Prego steak roll.

Being relaxed and on holiday, I forgot to time the duration between order and the meal being served. Its arrival after what seemed to be a reasonable wait and after the first few bites we were hooked on Mr. Fish Margate. The family platter costing R202-95 was outstanding value for money and should be plastered all over Margate for the world to enjoy. It consisted of 4 fish fillets with a special batter which Gustav refused to reveal, 12 tiger prawns, a helping of fish nuggets, chips, rice, corn balls and onion rings which were substituted for the calamari at my request and several sauces. And the Prego meal at R31-95 was a 20cm soft hero style roll bursting with well done strips of steak and chips, smothered in an authentic, tangy creamy sauce with hints of bird eye chilli. We had to ask for take home packs as the portions could have fed at least 6 people.

Outstanding meal, priced right from a SANHA certified outlet. Now how can we get Gustav to come to Gauteng?

PINK REVOLUTION

PINK REVOLUTION

Modesty is a virtue and a quality to be protected.

Visitors to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia would have noticed the successful introduction of women only pink taxis operated by female drivers.

This has been a welcome move following the pink coloured females only train coaches and buses.

These initiatives by the State gave women the option of travelling separately from men and be shielded from harassment.

SMILE AWHILE

In the serious world of Halaal, we take this moment to bring you a smile, a chuckle or even a hearty laugh. It's therapeutic, so pass it on:

Efficiency Expert

It is a trend these days for people to try and improve their skills by attending leadership courses. During one such course an efficiency expert, a Moulana from Middleburg, well known for his lectures concluded each module with a note of caution. He said, "Please brothers don't try these techniques at home."

After several such remarks a brother from the audience asked, “Why not?" At first the Moulana tried to shrug off answering the question. However, after several brothers started repeating the question, the Moulana explained.

"I watched my wife's routine at breakfast for years," he said for. "She made lots of trips between the refrigerator, stove, table and cabinets, often carrying a single item at a time.” So one day I told her, “meri pyaari jaan, why don't you try carrying several things at once? it will be so much easier and it will save time and energy. '"

And did it save time and energy?" a brother in the audience asked. "Actually, yes," replied Moulana Patel. "It used to take Naazira 25 minutes to make breakfast, but now for the last few years I am able to do it in seven or eight minutes every day.”

MYSTERIOUS SPICE AND ALL THINGS NICE

Your discovery column of spectacular spice, fabulous fruit, incredible ingredient, vital vegetable, marvelous mineral and vibrant vitamin.

LEMON

Of Indian origin, and widely grown in Mediterranean countries, the lemon is easily the most versatile of all the citrus fruits. Its acid taste makes it unpleasant to eat as a fruit, but it has many culinary uses, particularly in baking and confectionery as well as a beverage in the form of lemonade.

A few drops of lemon juice will enhance delicate fish or poultry dishes, creams and pies. The acid can also be used to prevent cut fruit from turning brown when exposed to air.

Benefit

The juices are excellent sources of vitamin C.

Drawbacks

• Acidic juices especially can erode tooth enamel.

• Citrus fruit may be sprayed with fungicide and preservatives.

See health and beauty section for skincare tip using lemon.
