RUNDOWN ON THE RUN-UP TO EID

What great sense of joy fills us when returning from an extended journey to the comfort of our home, family and friends. Any journey taken for a holiday, business or pilgrimage entails one having to make sacrifices and giving up comforts for the success of the trip.

Ramadaan is one of the world’s great institutions undertaken en masse by a quarter of its population annually. The month long abstention from partaking in any food, drink or indulging in conjugal relations from dawn to sunset, while engaging in additional prayer, increasing deeds of charity and devoting time for serious introspection is a march in our journey of life towards our Creator. As we complete the spiritual journey and approach the recurring happiness of Eid ul Fitr, we experience the joy of a returning traveller.

As everyone knows, no journey is complete until that final step over the finishing line. Irrespective of the gruelling training you had put into it, the painful sacrifices you have made, the early successes you might have achieved, it all comes down to the home stretch.  Any hesitation, stumbling or faltering leads to your entire preparation and race being an exercise in futility. Huge sailing ships of a bygone era returning home after a long journey took depth soundings to avoid running aground and spacecraft returning to earth use precise computerised retro rocketry to avoid crash landing.

After proving to yourself that you held a strong command over your desires, exercised sound self-control, enjoyed the taste of disciplinary life and achieved this great victory, which is a preparation in self-control and discipline of your desires to be free from sin, wrong doing, fear, vice, jealousy and causes of enslavement it would be a tragedy to run aground or crash land.

Whilst Ramadaan was a wondrous opportunity to bring about transformation in all spheres of our lives, Eid and the days to follow are golden opportunities to demonstrate the moral upliftment and spiritual elevation gained by showing compassion, mercy and kindness towards the creations of the Almighty

The SANHA family of officials, staff, certified plants and friends wishes all a Blessed Eid, and pray that all our homes be Divinely illuminated on the auspicious day of Eid and this heralds a renewed adherence to the Laws of Islam..

ORGANISATIONAL PROFILE

The Story of our Beginning, the Present and the Future

UUCSA

THE UNITED ULAMA COUNCIL OF SOUTH AFRCIA (UUCSA)

Founded in 1994 with the objective of providing a unified, credible and competent leadership. The advent of a new democratic dispensation created the need for a cohesive forum that would lend itself towards the preservation, promotion and protection of the distinct Muslim identity in South Africa. It championed the cause for the recognition of Muslim Personal Law.

FUNCTIONS

UUCSA is a voluntary association of Muslim theologian bodies, the members of which usually officiate at the various Massajid under their jurisdiction. UUCSA through its affiliates has been responsible for the solemnization and the provision of the marriage certificates of common-law Muslim marriages. It is also responsible for mediating marital disputes with the view of effecting reconciliation. In the absence of such reconciliation, it has the necessary religious authority to pronounce on the dissolution of the marriage in the case of a dispute between the parties.

The overarching functions of the affiliate bodies include:

  • Establishment and management of Islamic seminaries
  • Issuance of religious edicts
  • Welfare Services
  • Social Services
  • Marriage Counselling
  • Mediation and Arbitration Services
  • Liaison with national and provincial governmental structures
  • Regulation of Muslim dietary needs

COMPOSITION

The United Ulama Council of South Africa (UUCSA) is an umbrella body comprising major Muslim theological formations. It comprises of the following seven affiliates:

  • Muslim Judicial Council of South Africa
  • Jamiatul Ulama KZN
  • Sunni Jamiatul Ulama of South Africa
  • Sunni Ulama Council of South Africa
  • Eastern Cape Islamic Congress
  • Council of Ulama Eastern Cape

REPRESENTATION

UUCSA is representative of and enjoys the confidence and support of the vast majority of the Muslim populace in South Africa. UUCSA represents approximately 1350 members made up mostly of Muslim scholars. Geographically, UUCSA represents all nine provinces of South Africa. More specifically UUCSA through its affiliates represents approximately 400 Mosques and 200 educational institutes and religious seminaries in South Africa.

SANHA is proud to count two of the above affiliate organisations as members of the SANHA Executive.

HADEETH
(Sayings and Traditions of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him))

Anas bin Maalik narrates that when Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam arrived at al-Madinah, they used to engage in sports during two days. “What are these two days?” he asked.

“We used to engage in them during the Age of Ignorance,” they replied. Rasulullah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam remarked, “Indeed Allah has changed them for you with something better – Id-ul- Adhaa and Id-ul-Fitr.” [Abu Dawood]

CHIPPEWA SPUR

TRAILBLAZING HALAAL STEAK RANCH

Although one swallow does not make a summer or a swallow of one morsel a meal, a poor experience with this brand on the south side of town had steered this foodie away from it.

However, I was left with no choice when family arrived from abroad during the middle of Ramadaan and invited my significant other half and myself to break our fast at the new Chippewa Spur, Durban’s only SANHA certified Halaal Spur.

New it certainly was. Strategically placed at the entrance to the multi million rand upgraded Atrium at Overport City in Ridge Road, wide and roomy, it boasts a 400 seater outlet in the Spur decor with a kiddies play area and a prayer facility.

Chippewa Spur demonstrated a very clear understanding of their market by having a special Ramadaan menu in operation, with a carefully thought out selection. Further demonstration of this was the touch of having iced water on the table with hygienically packed dates, and wait for this… freshly fried crisp samoosas delivered to the tables a few minutes before breaking of the fast with compliments of the Management.

For starters we chose Buffalo Wings and promptly had 8 of them delivered to us, piping hot. The white dip which comprised of Roquefort Blue Cheese and methinks sour cream was a hit and the wings flew, if you excuse the pun. Good value at R46-95.

As for the mains by coincidence and not gender discrimination, we males opted for a Cheddamelt Steak and a Fillet Steak. The ladies chose the Monday special of a Chicken Burger where you buy one at R52.95 and get another free.

If there was a cop at the door, we would have been arrested for the Burgers were a steal. Full sized with filleted chicken and served with onion rings and chips at two costing R52-95 total, our table would have been declared a crime scene; but the ladies ensured that the “evidence” disappeared rather quickly.

As someone who is “professionally sceptical” I had to concede and give due to Spur for getting them just perfect. They were done to the degree that we individually required and served without any mix-ups. The secret seems to be in their aging and tenderising process. The Cheddamelt sauce has no peer and I have given up trying to replicate it at home. I now simply pick it up at the supermarket under their brand name.

If the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach then I would be safe in saying many a man will have Chippewa Spur at heart.

I DIDN'T KNOW THAT

Interesting "bites" to whet the appetite for knowledge.

CATHOLIC BUTCHER SWEARS BY HALAAL MEAT

Australia has a diverse population, which struggles with assimilation and national identity issues. Whilst the institution of Halaal seems unfairly caught in the crossfire, a Catholic butcher from Canberra, in the Australian Capital Territory, had a different story to tell.

Talking on ABC, the national television and radio network, butcher Matthew explained the success that he achieved by opening a Halaal butchery 18 years ago to serve the growing demand from the Muslim population.

His business trebled in the first year and quadrupled the subsequent year with Muslims making up sixty percent of his customers today.

What many listeners found amazing was the fact that Matthews categorically stated that he “definitely” preferred Halaal meat as it was more tender and tasted better due to the animal being bled properly during the Halaal slaughter process.

7. "Reason for leaving last job: They insisted that all employees get to work by 08:45 am every morning. I couldn't work under those conditions".

8. "The company made me a scapegoat, just like my three previous employers”.

9. "Finished eighth in my class of ten".

10. "References: none. I've left a path of destruction behind me”.

KNOW ISLAM SERIES

One out of every five persons on this planet is a Muslim. He is your neighbour, customer, supplier, employee, boss or friend.

THE GREETING - ASSALAAMU ALAIKUM

This is an expression that Muslims say whenever they meet one another. It is a statement of greeting with peace. The meaning of it is: "Peace be upon you".

Muslims try to establish peace on earth through the friendly relation of greeting and meeting one another.

Those around the Prophet Jesus (peace be upon him) including himself greeted each other with “peace” in their lives as seen in the Scriptures;

John 20:19           Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!”

John 20:21           Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you!....”

1 Samuel 25:6     David instructed emissaries whom he sent to Nabal; “And thus  you shall salute                                 him; “Peace be to you”.

We invite all to come to common terms and say Peace be on you.

MYSTERIOUS SPICE

Ful medames, simply known as fūl, is an Egyptian/Sudanese dish of cooked and mashed fava beans served with olive oil, chopped parsley, onion, garlic, and lemon juice. A staple meal in Egypt and Sudan. Used in Middle Eastern countries since the fourth century.

Although there are countless ways of embellishing fūl, the basic recipe remains the same. Once the fūl is cooked it is salted and eaten plain or accompanied by olive oil, corn oil, butter, clarified butter, buffalo milk, béchamel sauce, fried or boiled eggs, tomato sauce, garlic sauce, tahini or fresh lemon juice.

Health and Beauty

Look good - feel good. Tips for a sound mind in a sound body

With the end of Ramadaan behind us food outlets will have already commenced attracting patrons to the pleasant indulgence of a meal with friends and family.

Whiles many a diet and self-imposed rules display vulnerability at a restaurant dinner or lunch, here are a few simple tips for a healthier eating experience.

1. Eat as much as you like buffet

Avoid this option and opt for a simple one or two course meal.

2. Go for fish or lean meat

Fish and skinless chicken are good sources of protein.

3. Salad, Side dishes and Breads

You can switch your highly refined white breads to wholemeal varieties. Salads and vegetable side dishes are good additions to your simple main course.

4. Sauces and Dressings

Ask for this separately as you will be able to control the amount you use rather than it being “smothered”over your serving. Substitute rich creamy sauces and dressings with lightweights such as tomato based ones.

5. Eat slowly and do not be swayed by friends

Take time to chew and eat your food. Do not be pressurised to unhealthy selections by your friends.

6. Dessert

Look at fruit options. And if you have to have Ice creams then opt for sorbet or frozen yoghurts.
