TRADE EXHIBITIONS: BANE OR BOON

We have been asked as to why SANHA involves itself with trade exhibitions.

SANHA was founded 18 years ago as a nationally represented Halaal Authority. With the support and guidance of a broad spectrum of Ulama, SANHA’s aim was to be above cultural, geographical and petty politics and refuse to serve vested business interests. Instead, its aim was to make Halaal products widely available and accessible.

This principle was to alleviate the hardships experienced by the minority Muslim community in sourcing Halaal products, consumption of which is an article of their faith, and also to give traders an opportunity to reap the rewards of growing this niche market. Accordingly, every opportunity is utilised in vigorously pursuing this principle and assistance is offered in making this a reality.

Cognisant of the fact that the consumption of Halaal is a religious requirement subscribed to by a fifth of mankind and transcends national boundaries, SANHA has endeavoured to build bridges between suppliers and consumers through institutions committed to this ideal.

One such institution and the Big Daddy of them all is the AFRICA’s BIG SEVEN (AB7) which is to be held this year at Gallagher Estate from the 22-24 June 2014 with its time tested amalgam of 7 leading shows co-located under one roof. Organised by Exhibition Management Services with its proud 30-year-old track record, AB 7 together with SAITEX has a specialised focus on the A-Z of the food and related industries with a thousand exhibitors and draws up to 17,000 visitors from 60 countries.

SANHA invests substantial resources and time in this very important platform in creating a specialist SANHA pavilion and encourages its certified plants and subscribers to utilise this window of opportunity as both exhibitors and visitors, to seek out new technologies, latest trends, purchase or sell products and establish partnerships. It’s a boon and many a success story has already been told by exhibitors and buyers. Shouldn’t yours be one of them?

For fantastic opportunities and costs to exhibit in the SANHA pavilion click here for details.

The Noble Quran and example of our Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) encouraged trade and Halaal earnings. Surah an-Nisaa, Verse 29 of the Noble Quran reads:

"… let there be amongst you traffic and trade by mutual goodwill."

ORGANISATIONAL PROFILE

The Story of our Beginning, the Present and the Future

Many organisations with dedicated officials are selflessly serving the cause of Halaal worldwide. We ask Allah to bless them abundantly, Aameen.

We reproduce a selection of their messages to SANHA on the occasion of our last AGM.

On behalf of the National Muslim Prison Board of South Africa I would like to offer heartfelt congratulations to the South African National Halaal Authority on the hosting of yet another Annual General Meeting.

Our Board is sincerely grateful to SANHA for the services rendered by its personnel in assisting the application of halaal standards in the Correctional Centres. We also acknowledge the important achievements of SANHA in the Halaal certification department, a key aspect of our social and Deeni lives in today’s environment.

I encourage the members of SANHA to continue the hard work with sincerity, commitment, and dedication, not forgetting the importance of taqwa at all times, for that is the basis of our success. Good Character in speech and in behaviour should always be maintained, regardless of our own feelings and emotions. We should continue to review and renew our intention for the work we are engaged in. With sincerity in intention and unity of purpose, you will earn the Pleasure of Allah and your work will continue to prosper, Insha Allah. The certification of halaal food, as you well know, is a vital aspect of Muslims’ lives; so do not compromise in this regard. Continue to apply and maintain the highest of standards. Your Rewards are with Allah.

May Allah grant your directors, office bearers, field workers, and all those who support your organisation the ability to continue their sterling services with ikhlaas, dedication, and unity, and may HE grant you the fullest of rewards, Aameen

HADEETH
(Sayings and Traditions of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him))

Abu Hurayrah radiyallahu anhu narrated that Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam said, "He who deceives us is not from amongst us."

[Authenticated by al-Imaam al-Haakim upon the principles of al-Imaam Muslim]

Comment: Islam places high emphasis upon morality and ethics. The fact that the above Hadith was uttered in the market place, should draw our attention to awareness of our Creator when transacting. The high incidences of false declarations of Halaal and the fraudulent usage of logos are sad symptoms of a morally apathetic society. Let us conduct ourselves according to the rules and ethics of Islam, irrespective of the race, nationality and religion of the other party.

PUMPKIN AND CORN PAP

Brisbane’s Nazima Hansa aka as the cookery columnist KB is an expatriate South African with a passion for cooking and travel. During a recent trip to South Africa she tried her hand at the traditional Pap also known as mielie pap, a porridge / polenta dish made from mielie-meal (ground maize).

Her variation of adding pumpkin, sweet corn, green chillies and pepper is definitely worth a try.

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 Cups Cooked Pumpkin
  • 2 Cups Mealie Meal or Polenta
  • 125g Butter
  • ½ Tsp Garlic Salt
  • 1 Tsp Ground Garlic
  • 3 Cups Water
  • 1 Can Cream-Style Corn - blended to form a puree

  • 1 Cup Frozen Mealies
  • 2 Cups Water
  • 1 Tsp Salt
  • 1 Tsp Green Chillies
  • ¼ Tsp White Pepper
  • 2 Tablespoon Ghee

METHOD

  1. Sauté garlic, green chillies in the ghee and add pumpkin, pureed sweetcorn, salt, pepper, garlic salt and 1 cup frozen mealies and cook for approximately 3 minutes.
  2. Add the butter and stir until butter melts.
  3. Add the 3 cups of water and bring to the boil.
  4. Mix the mealie meal/polenta with 2 cups of water and add to the boiling mixture.
  5. Stir continuously for 3 minutes and then cover the pot to allow the pap to steam for 5 minutes, don’t overcook.

Serve hot with barbequed meat or baked beans.

ON MY PLATE

Lingering longer or on the move, he stops here, there and everywhere to share what’s on his plate and his mind. He may be in your place soon but you will never know he is there.

FGB’S - A FLIPPING GOOD BUY

I suffered a case of foot and mouth disease the other day when my dear wife and I ran into our niece and nephew. In keeping with good manners I asked them if they would like to join us for a home-cooked meal. And that's when they put the proverbial foot in my mouth by saying, “if it's home-cooked we can join you tonight after Esha,” and they added, “we would love to have those burgers like the steak house that you used to take us to.”

As it is very tricky to replicate the professional gas-fired flame grill of a steak house restaurant at home, I felt an anxiety attack coming on. I had to get information fast, so I turned to the source that I know best. No! Not Google but my dear wife. She said, “pick up a pack of FGBs. FGB’s? What is an FGB? I get into the local store - and ask the person what is an FGB and I get directed to the freezer section where I spy a 500g pack of six prime beef burgers patties marked in bold writing for the whole world to see, “ I&J FGB’s, Flaming Good Burgers.” It is important to note that only the I&J Beef burger range is certified by SANHA and carries their logo. I grabbed a pack marked at R53, a head of iceberg lettuce and some brown hamburger rolls from the bakery.

Later in the day I followed the instructions to the letter and chose the grilling option. They were done in about 10 minutes from frozen with very little shrink factor and amazingly with just the right taste and texture of a flame grilled burger. A good hamburger is like writing a good story it needs a good foundation, a strong body and a great finish.

The foundation was the bottom bun on which we generously spread some relish. You could make up one or use a store bought one. The next layer was our roughly torn iceberg lettuce, a slice of pickled cucumber, thinly sliced tomato and a dollop of mustard sauce. On this we placed the beef patty which we topped with grated cheddar cheese. A slice of processed cheese would do just as well but we were out of stock. The burgers went under the grill for a minute until the cheese melted which we capped with the top halves of the buns. Before capping we spooned a generous helping of a mix on the bun which we made from Greek yoghurt, Dijon mustard whipped together and finished with sprinkling of garlic salt and lemon juice. You could substitute this with mayonnaise if you prefer.

The brown bun was an excellent vehicle for the meat, the patty was perfect with the right meat to bun ratio, the crunchy lettuce, each layer of relish and the gooey yellow cheese was in the words of the president of our country in his state of the nation speech, a good story to tell. Served on a plate with chunky chilli aromat-seasoned chips and a side salad, not a morsel was left and this Uncle felt very special in pulling it off.

What a find! An economically priced product that delivers big on the steak house taste. What a find. Now my freezer is never without an FGB pack.

I&J exclusively source their range of beef burger products from Karan Beef, a 40 year old world-class South African company that sources its beef only from its own feedlots and manufactures this to the highest international standards. The slaughter and production processes are under SANHA’s supervision and certified by SANHA.

I DIDN'T KNOW THAT

Interesting "bites" to whet the appetite for knowledge.

STAPLE FOOD OF THE WORLD

Bread is man’s oldest prepared and best known food of the world. There is hardly any part of the world that bread is not produced, sold and consumed daily.

Sadly, bread also ranks as the highest wastage food in the world estimated at 30% which is double the amount of other edible foods.

25 million loaves of bread are baked daily in South Africa and forms the main carbohydrate diet of the indigenous people.

SMILE AWHILE

In the serious world of Halaal, we take this moment to bring you a smile, a chuckle or even a hearty laugh. It's therapeutic, so pass it on:

Oops! Did I say that.

The second of our two part, strange but true, quotations taken from Motor Vehicle Accident Insurance claim forms.

11. I told the other idiot what he was and went on.

12. A pedestrian hit me and went under my car.

13. I unfortunately ran over a pedestrian and the old gentleman was taken to hospital, much regretting the circumstances.

14. I thought the side window was down but it was up, as I found when I put my head through it.

15. If the other driver had stopped a few yards behind himself the accident would not have happened.

16. She suddenly saw me, lost her head and we met.

17. Cow wandered into my car. I was afterwards informed that the cow was half-witted.

18. Three women were talking to each other and when two stepped back and one stepped forward I had to have an accident.

19. There were plenty of lookers-on but no witnesses.

20. A bull was standing near and a fly must have tickled him because he gored my car.

Q.  Could you please give me a list of Halaal Restaurants in Pietermaritzburg?

A. The following restaurants are certified by SANHA:

  • Debonairs Pizza - Raisethorpe, 033-397-9011
  • Scooters Pizza - Raisethorpe, 033-397-1939
  • Willowton Palace - PMB City, 033-394-4926

Q. I called your office yesterday to enquire whether 'Mantelli’s Shortbread Finger biscuits are Halaal? The list of ingredients has animal fat (butterfat), but was reassured that it referred to the butter content. I still feel somewhat uneasy about it. The packet has an MJC stamp on it.

A. Mantelli’s Biscuits are certified by both the MJC and SANHA. As advised, the animal fat refers to the butter content in the product which is produced by churning cream or milk of animals, hence the term animal fat in the ingredient listing.

MANAGEMENT LESSONS FROM THE QURAN

There are 5 essential elements of effective management demonstrated by the Prophet Moosa (Moses) peace be upon him) and summarized in the following verse of the Noble Quraan.

"O my Lord! Expand my breast and ease my task for me; and remove the impediment from my speech. So they may understand what I say: and give me a minister from my family, Haroon, my brother; Add to my strength through him, and make him share my task." Surah 20 (Taha) Verse 25-32
