June 2017 :: Ramadaan 1438 No. 95
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

As Ramadaan draws to an end on Sunday or Monday depending on the sighting of the moon, every Muslim looks forward with the greatest of anticipation to the day known as Eid-ul-Fitr.

Among the various methods intended to awaken the spiritual life of a Believer, Ramadaan, the month of fasting, is an intensive training programme to instill Allah consciousness (Taqwa) in the hearts of the Believers. The Divinely-ordained practical training of determination in warding off the pangs of hunger and thirst voluntarily while abstaining from conjugal relations for thirty days from dawn to sunset, devotion to prayer, exercising discipline in speech and action with increased acts of charity drew us closer to our Creator and instilled a new sense of purpose in our lives. It now makes it mandatory for us to step out of our comfort zone in the year ahead and apply the lessons learned.

Eid and the days to follow are opportunities to demonstrate the moral upliftment and spiritual elevation gained through fasting by showing compassion, mercy and kindness towards the creation of the Almighty.

Amongst these are our non-Muslims neighbours, teachers, co-workers, classmates and business acquaintances. Let us invite them and their families to our Eid festivities which will be a practical and meaningful demonstration of Islam and Muslim culture, very far removed from the negativity of what is portrayed in many of the media streams.

On behalf of all of us at SANHA, our certified plants and families we ask the Almighty to help you to continue on the virtuous road you have been treading, protect you in your journey through life from this EID-UL - FITR to the next, bless you, your family, homes and business with harmony, peace and prosperity on this joyous occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr.

(Sayings and Traditions of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him))

Az-Zuhri narrates that Allah’s Messenger (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) would emerge on Eid al-Fitr and proclaim the Takbeer (Allahu Akbar, Allah is the greatest!) until he reached the prayer place and performed the Salaam. Once the Salaah was complete he stopped reciting the Takbeer. [Ibn Abi Shaybah]

Comment: Takbeer is one of the most salient manifestations of the joy and triumph a Muslim feels on the Day of Eid, as discussed in our Editorial. A Muslim never forgets Allah, whether in joy or sorrow, triumph or adversity.

In the serious world of Halaal, we take this moment to bring you a smile, a chuckle, a hearty laugh and a lesson. It's therapeutic, so pass it on.

Halaluddin, a subsistence farmer from a small village also sold his butter in the nearby town during his monthly visits there.

A prominent and wealthy shop owner in the town was his regular customer.

Every month Halaluddin would deliver to the shop owner the required butter in 1kg blocks. In turn he would receive much-needed grocery items like sugar, beans, flour etc. from the shop owner.

One day the shop owner on an impulse decided to weigh the butter and to his shock discovered that every block of the butter weighed 900 grams instead of 1kg.

When Halaluddin came to supply the butter the following month, the furious shop owner confronted him with his findings and ordered him to leave the shop.

To this Halaluddin replied courteously: "Sir, I am but a poor villager. I don't have enough money to buy the required weights for weighing the butter. I usually put the 1kg sugar you give me on one side of the weighing scale and weigh the butter on the other side.”

One out of every five persons on this planet is a Muslim. He is your neighbour, customer, supplier, employee, boss or friend.

Just on a year ago, one of the world’s most renowned personalities, a legendary world champion and a wonderful Muslim, Muhammad Ali passed away (May Allah elevate him to Paradise).

A fearless fighter, he delivered a knockout message to President Trump’s Islamaphobic plan to ban Muslims from entering the USA.

He said, “I am a Muslim and there is nothing Islamic about killing innocent people in Paris, San Bernardino, or anywhere else in the world. True Muslims know that the ruthless violence of so called Islamic jihadists goes against the very tenets of our religion.

We as Muslims have to stand up to those who use Islam to advance their own personal agenda. They have alienated many from learning about Islam. True Muslims know or should know that it goes against our religion to try and force Islam on anybody.

Speaking as someone who has never been accused of political correctness, I believe that our political leaders should use their position to bring understanding about the religion of Islam and clarify that these misguided murderers have perverted people's views on what Islam really is.”

Interesting "bites" to whet the appetite for knowledge.

It’s not quite the manna from heaven described in the Scriptures of the Bible and the Noble Quraan. However there is the populace of the state of Oaxaca in Mexico who get a freebie for a day or two every spring that descends from the sky.

Flying ants called Chicatanas leave their nests and go skyward with a buzzing rustle of their wings.

At dawn they fall to the ground and families go out and gather them. Eaten roasted or made into a sauce, it is a delicacy and a source of protein.
